CELL PHONE INVENTOR — UKRAINIAN

By Andrew Gregorovich

The world's first telephone call on a cell phone was made on April 3, 1973 in New York City on Sixth Avenue near the New York Hilton Hotel. The call on the bulky two and a half pound cell phone was made by its inventor Martin Cooper an employee of Motorola. It took Cooper, an electronics expert, only 90 days to create the large first cell phone, the Motorola DynaTac.

According to Wikipedia "Cooper was a son of Ukrainian immigrants" a point noticed by my son Michael. Cooper was born in Chicago on December 26, 1928. He served in the American navy and graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology with a master's degree in electrical engineering. He taught evening classes at the university. In 1954 he started working at Motorola becoming its Vice-President and served as the corporate director of Research and Development. The very first cell phone call was made earlier by William Shatner (who also traces his family to Ukraine) as Captain Kirk in the TV serial Star Trek. But Captain Kirk's use of the cell phone was imaginary because no such phone existed. However, Martin Cooper got his inspiration to create a cell phone after seeing Shatner on TV holding a small non-working cell phone and it has now become one of the world's most ubiquitous items. Cooper is married to Arlene Harris and is the Chairman and Cofounder of the company Dyna LLC. Martin Cooper is featured in the William Shatner documentary How William Shatner Changed the World (2005). Other Ukrainian inventors include the Helicopter by Igor Sikorsky, the Dzus aircraft fastener by William Dzus, Atomic Bomb trigger by George Kistiakovsky, the world's first space satellite Sputnik by Serhiy Korolev, the world's first communications satellite in space (COMSAT), by Joseph V. Charyk, and the Light Emitting Diode LED) by N. Holonyak.
