The documentary Genocide Revealed was shown to the general public at the Glenwood Arts Theatre, in Overland Park on October 5. As the end credits rolled, complete silence filled the theatre. No one moved as disbelief at the tragic story so few knew anything about took hold. This was followed by a lengthy question and answer period with the film’s director. One audience member present, whose parents lived through the famine-genocide, thanked the filmmaker for making the documentary and bringing the story out. Film producer Yurij Luhovy and his documentary Genocide Revealed was invited to...

Leaders from eight former Soviet states gathered Saturday to celebrate enduring cooperation over the two decades since their nations collectively gained independence, but mutual acrimony and recriminations cast a shadow over the event. The heads of state from the Commonwealth of Independent States, a loose association of ex-Soviet republics, ended the summit in the capital of Tajikistan by signing a declaration calling for peaceful conflict resolution among member states and the creation of a free trade zone. The summit took place against the backdrop of a simmering row over natural gas prices between Russia and Ukraine. The Armenian and Azerbaijani delegations also exchanged frosty remarks about their long-running dispute over the contested Nagorno-Karabakh region...

At a recent briefing at the United Nations in New York the Assistant Secretary General for Human Rights addressed human rights issues, but limited his presentation to countries, albeit abusive, but with little clout at the UN. I voiced my concern with human rights abuse in traditional longstanding member states and the difficulty of raising this issue, in particular, when the abuser is the Russian Federation, not only a member state, but a permanent member of the UN Security Council with veto power. I pointed out that in at least two instances the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights simply failed to respond to letters and memoranda on human rights in the Russian Federation submitted by the Ukrainian World Congress. The Assistant Secretary encouraged me to continue monitoring and submitting evidence even when there appears to be no response or reaction. He pointed out that...

An FBI report kept secret for 25 years said the Soviet Union "quite likely fabricated" evidence central to the prosecution of John Demjanjuk – a revelation that could help the defense as closing arguments resume Wednesday in the retired Ohio auto worker's Nazi war crimes trial in Germany. The newly declassified FBI field office report, obtained by The Associated Press, casts doubt on the authenticity of a Nazi ID card that is the key piece of evidence in allegations that Demjanjuk served as a guard at the Sobibor death camp in occupied Poland. Throughout three decades of U.S. hearings, an extradition, a death sentence followed by acquittal in Israel, a deportation and now a trial in Munich, the arguments have relied heavily on the photo ID from an SS training camp that indicates Demjanjuk was sent to Sobibor. Claims that the card and other evidence against Demjanjuk are Soviet forgeries have repeatedly...

Apparently confident that now it can do so without objections from the Yanukovich government in Kyiv, Moscow has disbanded the Federation of National Cultural Autonomy of Ukrainians of Russia and is setting the stage for closing the Ukrainian library in the Russian capital by continuing its seizures of “extremist” literature there. The Russian government, like its Soviet predecessor, has never been supportive of the more than five million ethnic Ukrainians living there, refusing to open any Ukrainian-language state schools even as it has complained about closure of some of the many Russian-language schools operating in Ukraine. But in recent weeks, Moscow has moved against even the few Ukrainian institutions...

The persecution of human and democratic rights leader Boris Nemtsov continues in Putin’s Russia. On January 2, 2011, Boris Nemtsov, leader of the democratic opposition movement Solidarity and Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister from 1997-1998, was sentenced to a maximum 15 days imprisonment as allowed under Article 19.3 of the Administrative Offenses Code (“disobeying police”). He was arrested on December 31, 2010 and held until January 2, 2011 at Tverskoe police station in a 1.5 by 3 meter concrete cell, without a window, bed or mattress. On January 2, 2011, Moscow Judge Olga Borovkova forced Boris Nemtsov to stand for the duration of the four hour trial, disregarding thirteen defense eye-witnesses as well as refusing to allow a video of Nemtsov’s arrest as evidence. Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj (Etobicoke Centre), who...
