Ottawa, Ontario―The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, will travel to Ukraine today. The Minister will review the progress of Canada's development work in sustainable economic growth, particularly in the agriculture sector and the results Canada is achieving in the lives of the Ukrainian people. The visit will also be an opportunity for Canada to advocate for freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law for all Ukrainians.

"Canada and Ukraine have had a long history over many decades. Canada is committed to helping Ukraine with its economic growth in a strengthened democracy," said Minister Oda. "A lasting impact to better the lives of Ukrainians can only be achieved with sustainable economic growth within an environment that provides opportunities for all in a free, open, and democratic society."

The Minister will travel with a Canadian delegation of representatives of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Canadian Ukrainian business leaders and the League of Ukrainian Canadians.

"Our visit will provide a unique opportunity to engage key Canadian and Ukrainian partners in our work to help the country's sustainable economic growth," continued Minister Oda. "We will ensure Canadian support remains relevant to the people of Ukraine and aligned with Canadian democratic values."

Through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Canada's development program in Ukraine has achieved significant results. For example, Canada's support helped increase the competitiveness of more than 60,000 smallholder farmers and agricultural professionals.

Canada's assistance also helped the development of new businesses and the growth of existing businesses.

In 1991, Canada was the first Western country to recognize Ukrainian independence from the Soviet Union. Since then, Canada has supported development that helps democratic and economic development.
