MOST G20 MEMBERS CONDEMN THE RUSSIAN INVASION OF UKRAINE

World leaders used the G20 joint final document, which different sources call a declaration, a statement or a communiqué, to “slam Russia’s war in Ukraine, which has dominated the summit,” according to DW.

“Most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and stressed it is causing immense human suffering and exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economy,” the document said.

It then reiterated the position of these members that “deplores in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and demands its complete and unconditional withdrawal from the territory of Ukraine.”

However, the joint communiqué also acknowledged that “there were other views and different assessments of the situation,” as well as regarding sanctions, DW reports.

According to Reuters, the declaration also said international law must be upheld and the threat of the use of nuclear weapons was inadmissible, as well as welcomed the Black Sea grain initiative.

A story by Axios mentions that “Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who stood in for President Vladimir Putin at the summit, accused Western countries of trying to “politicize” the communiqué by demanding an explicit condemnation of Russia.”

The full text of the communiqué is 17 pages long and covers topics including climate change, food security, and the global economic recovery from the pandemic, Axios observes.
