NEW PRIME MINISTER OF UKRAINE: WHO IS DENYS SHMYGAL?

    Ukrainian Parliament voted for the resignation of current Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk. His position now belongs to Denys Shmygal, former Vice Prime Minister and the Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine.

Together with the new Prime Minister, several new ministers came to the Cabinet of Ministers. We’ll talk about them separately, but now we’ll dwell on the new head of government in more detail.

Denys Shmygal was born on October 15, 1975 in Lviv, he is 44 years old. In 1997, he graduated from the Lviv Polytechnic University, production management (engineering), engineer-economist.

In 2003, he became a candidate of economic sciences (Institute for Regional Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine).

In 2009, he began his career in the civil service. Soon he became the head of the Chief Department of Economics of the Lviv Regional State Administration. Later - as the head of the chief department of economics and industrial policy, and as the director of the department of economic development, investment, trade and industry.

In 2014, he became deputy head of the State Department of the Ministry of Revenue of the Lviv Region. In 2015-2017, he worked at the Lvivholod trade and manufacturing company.

In 2017-2019, he was Deputy General Director for Social Affairs at DTEK ZakhіdEnergo, Director of DTEK Burshtynska TPP, acting Deputy General Director for Social Affairs at DTEK Zakhіdenergo.

Since August 2019 till February 2020 he chaired the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional State Administration. He was later appointed Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Development of Communities and Territories in the Government of Oleksiy Honcharuk.

Denys Shmygal, because of his work at DTEK, is often allied to the Ukrainian oligarch Rinat Akhmetov.

Shmygal himself says the following about this: “I joined the DTEK company and, in particular, the Burshtyn TPP, and I was its head for the last two years, I got there via an open competition. I began as the Deputy General Director of DTEK Zakhidenergo JSC and then took the position of the head of the Burshtyn TPP. Level of management, with whom I communicated, was: the head of DTEK Energo Dmytro Sakharuk and the head of DTEK Maxym Timchenko. But, by and large, I only met them at official meetings," he told to Ukrinform news agency.

According to the declaration, submitted by Shmygal in July 2019 as a candidate for the post of head of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional State Administration, in 2018 he earned in DTEK holding almost $ 150,000.

He also declared 35,000 thousand dollars of cash, and his wife Catherine - 80,000 dollars.

The premier’s family owns a house (215.9 sq. m) and a garage (15.9 sq. m) in Lviv, two land plots in Lviv (151 and 458 sq. m) and another two land plots in Lviv region (both 2.200 sq. m).

The property of his wife also includes non-residential premises in Kamenka-Bugska in the Lviv region (417.2 sq. m) worth over $200,000.

According to the declaration, Shmygal does not have a car. But his wife drives a Land Rover produced in 2016 which costs almost $35,000.
