UWC WELCOMES TWO PACE RESOLUTIONS CONFIRMING RESOLUTE POSITION ON RUSSIAN AGGRESSION IN UKRAINE

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) welcomes the adoption  by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) of two resolutions confirming the resolute position of PACE on the continuing Russian aggression in Ukraine.

The resolutions were based on two reports: "Political consequences of Russian aggression in Ukraine" presented by rapporteur Kristýna Zelienková (Czech Republic) and "Legal remedies for human rights violations on the Ukrainian territories outside the control of the Ukrainian authorities" presented by rapporteur Marieluise Beck (Germany).

The resolutions reiterate the condemnation by PACE of the illegal annexation of Crimea and highlight the deteriorating human rights situation on the peninsula.

Focusing on the ongoing military aggression of the Russian Federation in Eastern Ukraine as violations of international law and the principles upheld by the Council of Europe, PACE once again called for the Russian Federation to withdraw its troops from the territory of Ukraine and stop military supplies to the separatists; and for full implementation of the Minsk Agreements, starting with the full respect of the ceasefire.

The UWC welcomes the name change of the report "Political Consequences of Russian Aggression in Ukraine", which was originally titled “Political Consequences of the Conflict in Ukraine.” The recommendation to accurately refer to the situation in Ukraine as “Russian aggression” was presented by UWC President Eugene Czolij during his address to the PACE Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy on 7 December 2015.

“The Ukrainian World Congress congratulates rapporteurs Kristýna Zelienková and Marieluise Beck, and all members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for maintaining a principled position in the interest of safeguarding democratic values, upholding international law and protecting the territorial integrity of Ukraine and all states,” declared UWC President Eugene Czolij.
