On Aug. 24, Ukraine showcased a military increasingly built around machines — on the streets of Kyiv, on the Dnipro and in the skies above the capital.
KYIV — Ukraine’s 35th Independence Day parade offered a striking picture of how the country’s military has changed during more than four years of full-scale war with Russia.
There were no columns of soldiers, tanks or armored vehicles on Kyiv’s Khreshchatyk Boulevard. Instead, 30 ground robots moved through the capital, nine unmanned naval vessels traveled along the Dnipro River and nearly 70 drones flew overhead.
It was the first formal military parade since 2021 and, according to Ukrainian officials, the first public demonstration of unmanned military systems across three domains — land, sea and air.
The display also highlighted a distinction that sets Ukraine apart from other militaries: In June 2024, it formally established the Unmanned Systems Forces, the world’s first military branch dedicated specifically to unmanned warfare.
According to the Office of the President, nearly 100 unmanned systems took part in the display: 30 ground robots, nine maritime drones, 18 aerial interceptors, 27 bomber drones, eight reconnaissance systems and seven long-range strike drones.
The equipment was filmed at dawn and shown during afternoon Independence Day celebrations at St. Sophia Square, where President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed Ukrainian and European officials, including British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and European Council President António Costa.
A Military Designed to Spare Lives
The parade was more than a technological showcase. It reflected a central lesson of Ukraine’s war: machines can perform some of the most dangerous battlefield tasks while keeping soldiers out of harm’s way.
Ukrainian forces increasingly use unmanned systems for reconnaissance, ammunition delivery, mine-clearing, evacuation of wounded soldiers and attacks on Russian positions.
The Unmanned Systems Forces were created to collect battlefield experience, turn it into military doctrine and training, and work with Ukraine’s rapidly expanding domestic drone industry.
By the end of 2025, Ukrainian drone operators were carrying out an estimated 100,000 to 120,000 sorties each month. During the first half of 2026, the Defense Ministry approved 413 new types of unmanned aerial systems.
The speed of development reflects a military learning in real time. Lessons from the battlefield are quickly incorporated into new designs, production and tactics.
Robots on Khreshchatyk
The ground portion featured 30 robotic platforms, including TerMIT, Lynx, Simba, Ardal, Zmiy and Ratel.
Their rapid expansion marks one of the most significant changes in Ukraine’s military since Russia’s full-scale invasion. More than 22,000 domestically produced unmanned ground vehicles were ordered for delivery in 2026 — twice the number ordered in 2025.
By the end of June, ground robots had completed more than 66,000 battlefield missions.
The systems can transport ammunition and supplies, conduct reconnaissance, lay and clear mines, evacuate wounded troops and provide fire support. Some are equipped with machine guns or rocket systems.
In April, Ukrainian forces near Kupiansk used aerial drones and ground robots to capture a Russian fortified position without Ukrainian soldiers initially entering it. The operation illustrated how unmanned systems are increasingly being used not simply to support troops, but to replace them in the most exposed stages of combat.
The robots on parade were therefore not prototypes. They represented systems already being used on the battlefield.
A Navy Without Traditional Warships
On the Dnipro, nine unmanned vessels from the Magura, Sargan and Sea Baby families demonstrated another area in which Ukraine has pioneered new military technology.
Ukraine has used naval drones to attack Russian ships and infrastructure, conduct reconnaissance and challenge Russia’s control of the Black Sea.
The results have been significant. In December 2024, a Ukrainian Magura V5 naval drone used air-to-air missiles to destroy Russian helicopters over the Black Sea — the first known instance of a naval drone shooting down an aircraft with such a weapon.
In May 2025, another Magura drone destroyed a Russian Su-30 fighter near Novorossiysk. Ukrainian intelligence described it as the first destruction of a manned combat aircraft by a naval drone.
Other unmanned vessels have been equipped for reconnaissance and air defense. Together, these systems have allowed Ukraine to challenge Russia’s Black Sea Fleet without possessing a conventional navy of comparable size.
Drones Over Kyiv
The aerial display showed the breadth of Ukraine’s unmanned capabilities.
Eighteen interceptor drones opened the sequence, designed to hunt Russian Shahed-type attack drones and provide a potentially cheaper layer of air defense.
They were followed by 27 bomber drones capable of attacking Russian artillery, vehicles, fortifications and troops. Eight reconnaissance systems demonstrated the surveillance capabilities of Ukraine’s unmanned force.
The final group consisted of seven long-range strike drones, including the Morok and Sichen.
According to the Office of the President, Ukrainian long-range drones carried out nearly 2,000 strikes in 2025 and confirmed more than 1,000 destroyed targets inside Russia.
After the drones came Mirage 2000 and F-16 fighter jets supplied by Ukraine’s Western allies.
The sequence was symbolic: The manned aircraft flew last.
Ukraine as a Defense Innovator
Ukraine’s experience has increasingly attracted European attention. In July, the European Union and Ukraine agreed to expand cooperation on drone production, with €1 billion in initial funding and a broader investment plan worth €10 billion.
The partnership reflects growing recognition that Ukraine possesses something that cannot simply be purchased: battlefield experience and the ability to translate it rapidly into new technology.
Ukraine is also moving toward greater autonomy. New systems can identify and track targets with limited human intervention and, in some cases, continue operating when electronic warfare disrupts communications with their operators.
That experience is now shaping how European militaries think about the future of warfare.
A New Kind of Military Power
At the Independence Day ceremony, President Zelensky said Ukraine wanted to become a “true provider of security” for its European partners after the war.
The day’s military announcements reflected that ambition. Mr. Burnham said Britain would support efforts to expand production in Ukraine of the SCALP long-range cruise missile and back the development of a lower-cost alternative to the Patriot air-defense system.
The significance of Ukraine’s parade extended beyond the equipment displayed in Kyiv. It showed how a country fighting for its survival has transformed unmanned technology from an emerging capability into a central component of modern warfare.
For other militaries, the Ukrainian battlefield has become a laboratory for studying drones, robotics, artificial intelligence and conventional forces operating together at scale.
The machines that moved through Kyiv on Aug. 24 offered a glimpse of that future. They also reflected a more immediate wartime calculation: When every soldier is vulnerable, Ukraine is increasingly putting machines in harm’s way instead.
