U.S. President Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind a plan to provide Ukraine with new security guarantees that could include the deployment of European troops, Bloomberg reports.
His comments signify a shift in Washington’s engagement with Kyiv’s future security framework and come just days after his Aug. 18 summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.
Bloomberg reports that around 10 countries are prepared to send troops to Ukraine as part of a security guarantee.
The foreign forces would train Ukrainian soldiers away from the front lines once active combat ends.
“A package of security guarantees for Ukraine will take shape as soon as this week as leaders seize on President Donald Trump’s backing for a plan that involves sending European troops as part of a potential peace deal,” the report reads.
European leaders hope to use Trump’s proposal to strengthen Kyiv’s position ahead of a possible meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to sources, a meeting of European officials focused on plans to send British and French troops to Ukraine under the peace framework, including the number and deployment of forces.
The exact level of U.S. support remains unclear.
European military officials are expected to meet with their American counterparts soon to discuss “robust security guarantees and prepare for the deployment of a reassurance force,” the UK government said.
The negotiations will involve the NATO Supreme Allied Commander in Europe and defense ministers from member states, sources report. In the first phase, Ukrainian forces would receive assistance through training and reinforcements.
These forces would be supported by a multinational group composed mainly of European troops. Britain and France are reportedly ready to send hundreds of soldiers to be stationed in Ukraine away from the front lines.
The next phase of the plan would include intelligence sharing, border monitoring, the supply of weapons, and potentially air defense systems.
