In the heart of Canada, in the city of Thunder Bay, two dedicated representatives of the League of Ukrainian Canadians have received the city’s highest civic honour. Larissa Warywoda, President of the League of Ukrainian Canadians in Thunder Bay, and Kyle Gilhooly, Treasurer of the organization, were awarded the Citizens of Exceptional Achievement Award for their outstanding volunteer contributions.
This prestigious recognition stands as a testament to how the Ukrainian community continues to take root and flourish on Canadian soil, preserving its cultural identity while enriching the country’s multicultural tapestry.
Larissa and Kyle have devoted countless hours to serving the Ukrainian community. Their work extends far beyond formal duties, it is filled with genuine care, tireless energy, and a deep understanding of the needs of those they serve. Under their leadership, the League of Ukrainian Canadians in Thunder Bay does not simply function, it thrives, develops, and expands its horizons. The organization has become a true home for the Ukrainian spirit abroad, a place where traditions are preserved and new connections are forged between generations.
Particularly touching is Larissa and Kyle’s work in welcoming new Ukrainians arriving in Thunder Bay. At the cultural centre, they have organized numerous fundraising events, creating an atmosphere of warmth and support for those seeking refuge and a new life on Canadian soil. These gatherings provide hope and a sense of belonging to a community.
Larissa and Kyle have also breathed new life into the Karpaty campsite, clearing it from overgrowth and transforming it into a place where the community can gather, celebrate, and strengthen cultural bonds. In August, the campsite saw a number of community members celebrating Ukraine’s Independence Day. Their labour is not merely physical effort, but a symbol of renewal and care for a space where future generations can feel connected to their Ukrainian heritage.
Every initiative undertaken by Larissa and Kyle is infused with a sincere desire to help others. Whether promoting Ukrainian culture or creating opportunities for people to connect, they embody the finest values of community service. Their work reminds us that the true strength of a community lies in the dedication of individuals who care for the common good. This award is a worthy acknowledgment of years of labor and countless sacrifices of time and energy. It belongs not only to Larissa and Kyle, but to the entire Ukrainian community of Thunder Bay, which through its unity and mutual support demonstrates the strength of the Ukrainian diaspora.
The National Executive of the League of Ukrainian Canadians wholeheartedly congratulates Larissa Warywoda and Kyle Gilhooly on their achievement. Their example inspires us all to be better, more generous, and more devoted to our communities. May their work continue to bear fruit, and may the Ukrainian community of Thunder Bay flourish under their caring leadership.
