Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro awarded Ukrainian soldier Yanis Tereshchenko, who saved a man after being stabbed, with an award. The Italian official reported this on the social network “X”.
The Ukrainian was on vacation with his wife and son in the Italian city, where he saved the life of a passerby: he provided medical assistance to a young Tunisian who was bleeding after being stabbed.
The mayor received him and presented him with a book about Marco Polo, a plaque with the Venetian lion and tickets to the Museum of Natural History.
“Thanks to the first-aid kit he always carries with him and his promptness, he stopped the bleeding and helped him until help arrived. My personal gratitude and the gratitude of all of Venice for this great gesture of humanity, courage and altruism,” Brugnaro emphasized.
He also expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people on behalf of the entire city and expressed hope for achieving lasting peace.
Tereshchenko said that since he entered the service, he has always carried a first-aid kit with him, the Italian publication “Corriere della Sera” notes.
“We Ukrainians have learned to take care of each other: we must be ready to intervene immediately if a bomb explodes. It was a simple operation for me, but if I had not been there, this guy would have died because he was losing so much blood from his thigh, and every second was crucial,” the Ukrainian soldier explained.
The native of Odessa added that after his leave he would return to defend his land from the enemy.
