The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, passed sentences on the Ukrainian prisoners who served in the “Azov” regiment at different times.
This was reported by “Mediazona”.
The Rostov court was attended by 12 Ukrainian prisoners, they received the following terms:
Oleksandr Mukhin – 22 years;
Yaroslav Zhdamarov – 22 years;
Oleg Zharkov – 13 years;
Anatoliy Hrytsyk – 13 years;
Oleksiy Smykov – 13 years;
Oleg Mizhgorodsky – 17 years;
Oleksandr Irkha – 15 years;
Artem Grebeshkov – 20 years;
Artur Gretsky – 22 year
Oleksandr Merochenet – 22 years;
Oleksandr Tishkul – 22 years;
Mykyta Timonin — 22 years old.
Before the verdict was announced, Oleg Zharkov felt unwell, and an ambulance was called for him.
Another 11 Azov prisoners were sentenced in absentia, as they had already returned to Ukraine as part of a prisoner exchange.
The charges against the Ukrainian prisoners were based on the fact that they had served in Azov at various times and had expressed a “negative attitude towards the Russian-speaking population” and also held “pro-Ukrainian radical views.” Some of the prisoners participated in the defense of Mariupol and Azovstal.
Last year, a prisoner of war from the Azov regiment, Oleksandr Ishchenko, died in the Rostov-on-Don pre-trial detention center. Oleksandr Ishchenko died from “a closed blunt chest injury resulting from contact with a blunt object.” The Russians closed the case against him.
The trial of the Azovites began in June 2023.
