The new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Mark Carney, was sworn in and officially became the country’s prime minister after the resignation of Justin Trudeau. The ceremony took place on March 14 at the official residence of the governor general (representative of the British monarch) of Canada in Rideau Hall.
Mark Carney became the first prime minister in Canadian history without political or government experience. Before that, he worked at the central banks of Canada and Britain, as well as a non-staff advisor to Trudeau.
Most ministers retained their positions, including Defense Minister Bill Blair and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly.
Chrystia Freeland, who resigned in protest against Trudeau’s economic policies, also returned to the government. She will head the Ministry of Transport and Internal Trade.
