The Winnipeg Jets paid homage to Manitoba’s vibrant Ukrainian community on January 6, 2026, hosting their second annual Ukrainian Heritage Night during a matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights at Canada Life Centre.
The evening showcased the rich cultural traditions of one of Canada’s largest Ukrainian populations through an extensive program of music, dance and cuisine that transformed the hockey arena into a celebration of Ukrainian heritage.
The festivities began with Hoosli, the Ukrainian Male Choir, delivering stirring renditions of both the Canadian and Ukrainian national anthems. Rusalka Ukrainian Dance captivated audiences during the pre-game show and intermission performances, while the local band Zrada brought their contemporary interpretation of Ukrainian folk music to the in-bowl stage. Adding historical significance to the event, the Ukrainian Kyiv pavilion’s trident—a powerful symbol of Ukrainian national identity—was prominently displayed throughout the venue.
Canada Life Centre Executive Chef Steven Squier worked directly with members of the Ukrainian community to curate an authentic culinary experience. Hockey fans enjoyed traditional fare including varenyky, borscht and cabbage rolls, alongside creative fusion offerings such as cabbage roll poutine and a specially crafted varenyky Jet Dog topped with garlic sausage, sour cream and onions.
The evening also served a philanthropic purpose. Autographed team-issued Winnipeg Jets Ukrainian Heritage jerseys were made available through an online auction at tnyfauction.ca. The special edition jerseys feature a Ukrainian Heritage logo designed by Andrii Sobchuk, a Ukrainian newcomer and graphic designer. All proceeds from the auction are being directed toward grassroots and cultural initiatives within the Ukrainian community. The annual Ukrainian Heritage Night has quickly become an important fixture on the Jets’ calendar, reflecting Manitoba’s deep Ukrainian roots and the team’s commitment to celebrating the diverse communities that make up its fan base.
