GENOCIDE REVEALED AT THE KANSAS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Montreal:    The feature documentary Genocide Revealed was an Official Selection at the 11th annual Kansas International Film Festival (KIFF) held from September 30   to October 6.   With over 150 submissions from around the world, twenty-five documentaries, 18 narrative films were selected and 25 filmmakers, producers, actors were in attendance. The Festival, founded by Brian and Ben Mossman, is dedicated to the showing of independent cinema and is the premiere cultural and educational event of greater Kansas City, focusing on documentary and other independent films. The Festival’s president is Dr. Benjamin Meade.
The documentary Genocide Revealed was shown to the general public at the Glenwood Arts Theatre, in Overland Park on October 5. As the end credits rolled, complete silence filled the theatre. No one moved as disbelief at the tragic story so few knew anything about took hold. This was followed by a lengthy question and answer period with the film’s director. One audience member present, whose parents lived through the famine-genocide, thanked the filmmaker for making the documentary and bringing the story out.
Film producer Yurij Luhovy and his documentary Genocide Revealed was invited to the University of Kansas for the 2011 Palij Lecture Series in Ukrainian Studies at The Centre for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies (CREES) on October 4 in the Woodruff Auditorium. Luhovy was contacted by director of CREES, Prof. Edith Clowes, as part of their special Outreach Program. The Centre offers one of the leading programs in Ukrainians Studies in the U.S. Following the film, Luhovy answered various questions including about the process of doing research on the subject for the film.
On October 5, Yurij Luhovy was one of three film directors asked by the Head of the Cinema Department Dr. Dotty Hamilton and head of the documentary selection committee of KIFF to speak to a film making class at Avila University. Prof. Nicole Esquibel asked Yurij to explain to students the tedious process of selecting and inserting stock-shots including the expenses attached to it when acquiring world-rights. He compared his experience when he worked on Harvest of Despair before the fall of the Soviet Union when Soviet archives were inaccessible.
An upcoming New York premiere of Genocide Revealed will be held on Friday, November 4 at The Ukrainian Institute of America at 7pm, and one at the Ukrainian American Citizens’ Club in Albany on Sunday, November 6. Details will follow. On November 17, Genocide Revealed will be shown at the Mayfair Theatre in Ottawa.   For further information please visit www.ylu hovy.com, or to arrange for a film showing call 514 481 5871 or e mail: mmlinc@hotmail.com.
