UKRAINIAN COURSES AT YORK IN 2009/2010 taught by Dr. DARIA DAREWYCH
 
 
Daria Darewych is an art historian who has taught European art history courses at York since 1991. In 2002 she designed and started teaching a new course, Aspects of Ukrainian Culture, the first of its kind in Canada, in the European Studies Program at York. Ukrainian and Ukrainian Canadian art have been the focus of her research. She has written several monographs on Ukrainian artists and introductory essays to art catalogues in Canada, the USA, and Ukraine. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of London, Great Britain, and an MA in Art History from York University.
 
FALL SEMESTER
Dr. Daria Darewych will be teaching a third-year course focusing on Ukrainian art and architecture.
AP/HUMA 3980 3.00 ASPECTS OF UKRAINIAN CULTURE I
This lecture/seminar course examines selected topics of culture in Ukraine viewed in the European context, with an emphasis on the art and architecture. It includes the historical and social circumstances in which the culture developed. Starting with some of the oldest man-made structures in the world (c. 15,000 B.C.), it discusses prehistoric artifacts and settlements, Greek colonies, the Scythians, and the relevant Histories of Herodotus. The visual arts from the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical periods to the mid-19th century are studied. Selected readings in Ukrainian literature are discussed in relation to the visual arts.
Some of the topics to be covered:
1. Prehistory. From hunters and gatherers to agrarian society: Mammoth bone dwellings and artifacts, Trypillian, and Scythian cultures;
2. Classical art. The art and architecture of Greek colonies along the Black Sea
3. Medieval Period. Kyivan State and Byzantine influences: church architecture and icons. Echoes of the Romanesque and Gothic. Chronicles and illuminated manuscripts.
4. Renaissance. Growth of secular architecture and subject matter.
5. The Baroque. Golden age of Ukrainian art, architecture, and music.
6. Neoclassicism in art and literature
 
WINTER SEMESTER
Dr. Daria Darewych will be teaching a third-year course focusing on modern Ukrainian art and architecture.
 
AP/HUMA 3981 3.00 ASPECTS OF UKRAINIAN CULTURE II
 
This course examines developments in Ukrainian culture viewed in the European context from the mid-19th century to the present. It focuses on the visual arts and includes selected topics in literature and music. An overview of the political and social background is included. Starting with the art and poetry of Taras Shevchenko, it discusses the issues of nationalism and aestheticism/internationalism. Some of the topics covered:
1. Modernism in art, literature, and music
2. Romanticism
3. Impressionism and Post-Impressionism
4. The Ukrainian Avant-garde: Cubo-Futurism, Suprematism, Constructivism
5. M. Boichuk and his school
6. Art as propaganda / propaganda as art
7. Socialist Realism and Non-Conformist art
8. Post-modernism
9. Ukrainian Canadian art and architecture
 
BOTH COURSES ARE OFFERED ON TUESDAYS, 11”30 – 2:30
 
Students enrolled in any two of the Ukrainian Culture courses are eligible for the Petro Jacyk Scholarship.
