07.04.2009 – The League of Ukrainian Canadians and the League of Ukrainian Canadian Women together with the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada announce the creation of the LUC-Embassy Mazepa Art Competition Committee/Jury. Its task is to organize and adjudicate an art contest in honor of the Cossack Hetman Ivan Mazepa on the 300th anniversary of his death.
The LUC-Embassy Mazepa Art Competition is open to all youth. The committee/jury, composed of LUC members, Embassy staff and students, who are members of Ukrainian student clubs and associations, plans to announce the winners of this contest on December 29, 2009.
“It is an honor to work with youth on a common project that connects our past with the present, in the context of an all Canadian-Ukrainian initiative under the slogan: Have your national pride – Honour Mazepa,” said George Kelebay, member of the committee/jury and LUC-Etobicoke branch.
The sponsoring organizations aim to mark the life and achievements of Ivan Mazepa throughout 2009. The Mazepa Art Competition engages Ukrainian youth, Ukrainian schools and university students throughout this year and offers them opportunities that otherwise were unavailable.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR LUC-EMBASSY MAZEPA ART COMPETITION
Organizers of the Competition: League of Ukrainian Canadians, League of Ukrainian Canadian Women and the Embassy of Ukraine to Canada.
Patrons of the Competition: Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Ukrainian World Congress, World Council of Ukrainian Cooperatives.
Submission Deadline: 30 October 2009.
The artwork you submit to the LUC-Embassy Mazepa Art Competition Committee must be your original work. This means that you must create the art and put it together yourself. You may ask people to help you in gathering materials and ideas but you must be responsible for the final product that you send to the Competition. If LUC-Embassy Mazepa Art Competition Committee finds that the art is not your original work, it will be disqualified from the competition.

Judging Criteria
All projects will be judged based on two types of criteria: Combination of the Past With the Modern Aspects of Life and Artistic Expression. Each project may be awarded: Up to 60 Artistic points + up to 40 Combination points = Total - up to 100 points by each judge.
Jury Guidelines
Jury: The Jury will consist of members drawn from both the artistic Ukrainian community and the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada.
Evaluation: Each Judge will independently evaluate and score each project and the sum of all scores will be tallied. In the event of a tie, the judges will make an executive decision.
Combination of the Past With the Modern Aspects of Life Criteria:Each of the following criterion is worth a maximum of 10 points per judge.
1.Observation refers to how accurately the artist has observed historic events with modern issues and has represented them. 2. Vision refers to how well the artist has envisioned a positive future stemming from the personality of Mazepa and what he did. 3. Relevance refers to the degree of relevance the project is to the local, national or global community. 4.Imagination refers to the level of creativity the individual has adopted in viewing a problem and identifying a solution or a vision for the future.
Artistic Criteria: Each of the following criterion is worth a maximum of 10 points per judge.
1.Creativity refers to the newness and originality of the design. 2. Composition refers to the visual balance, static or dynamic, of the various elements of the project. 3. Expressionof meaning measures how well the project makes its own theme clear to the viewer. The artist's statement, if provided, should be considered in making this judgment. 4. Expressionof emotion refers to the extent to which the project can be expected to evoke an emotional response in the viewer. 5. Finish refers to the completion of the project and attention to quality. 6. Overall impression addresses the project as a whole, and is often based on the first glimpse of the finished piece. Without regard to the other criterion, does it stand on its own as a good and complete work of art?
THE DECISION OF THE JURY IS FINAL!
Announcement of results: results will be announced on 29 December 2009 in Ukrainian Echo and LUC/LUCW newsletter.
In addition, results will be published on LUC website, www.lucorg.com, and on the website of the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada, www.ukremb.ca. Results will be sent to each school.
Prizes: in each grade/age category, Committee will select three winners (1, 2 and 3 place), altogether 12 winners. In addition to awards, each prize winner will receive a certificate. 12 best artworks will be published in World Council of Ukrainian Cooperatives’ calendars.
Special Prize Award:
Special prize from the Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada
Special prize from the President of the League of Ukrainian Canadians
Recipients of special prize awards are selected separately by the Ambassador and President. They may or may not be included in list of 12 winners mentioned above.
During the art competition, the school that has sent the most number of artworks will be named Most Valuable Ukrainian School in Canada and will receive the MVUSC Award.
The LUC-Embassy Mazepa Art Competition Committee will select artworks for exhibition at the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada and published on web portals of the League of Ukrainian Canadians and the Ukrainian Embassy in Ottawa.
