UKRAINIAN WORLD CONGRESS URGES UNITED NATIONS TO SUSPEND RUSSIA’S MEMBERSHIP

(UWC). On 19 March 2014 Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij issued a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, and the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, John W. Ashe, in which he urged the United Nations to suspend Russia’s membership rights and privileges in the UN and to send peacekeeping troops to Ukraine to protect it from any further invasion by Russian troops.

Referring to the unprecedented in the 21st century invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces, and the forceful and illegal “annexation” of Crimea to Russia, the UWC President focused on the blatant violation of not only peace in the region, but the threat to security and stability throughout the world.

Recognizing the purpose of the United Nations to “maintain international peace and security”, Eugene Czolij urged the United Nations to urgently take effective collective measures, including severe sanctions against Russia, for its outrageous violations of world peace and security.

“Should the global community fail to reverse the Russian occupation of Ukraine, it will undermine the international rule of law, call into question all international agreements, including nuclear arms and international security agreements, and will render the world a much more dangerous place in which to live,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.

The UWC is the international coordinating body for Ukrainian communities in the diaspora representing the interests of over 20 million Ukrainians. The UWC has member organizations in 33 countries and ties with Ukrainians in 14 additional countries. Founded in 1967, the UWC was recognized in 2003 by the United Nations Economic and Social Council as a non‑governmental organization (NGO) with special consultative status.
