Why, one wonders, do you find support for Ukraine joining NATO in the USA among all shades of the Ukrainian-America diaspora and its academic institutions but not among Ukrainian experts in Canadian academia? In Canada, leading academic experts on contemporary Ukraine – David Marples (University of Alberta) and Dominique Arel (University of Ottawa) – remain either skeptical of Ukraine ever joining NATO or are opposed to Ukraine joining NATO. The Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute and its three Chairs have never come out against NATO. During summer schools, conferences and workshops, the Ukrainian Research Institute has organized important discussions of Ukraine’s national security that has included a pro-NATO component. Similarly with the Ukrainian programme at Columbia University...

Dear Editor: It has come to my attention that some statements attributed by me from various sources to Senator Charles Schumer in my article "Beware the Russian Bear" cannot be authenticated. I should like to retract those statements and apologize to Senator Schumer for misquoting him if, in fact, I did. However, his statements from "The Wall Street Journal" dated June 3, 2008 can be authenticated and relying on those alone, does not detract from the thrust of my argument...

On August 6, 2009 President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev wrote to President of Ukraine Victor Yuschenko expressing indignation over Russia-Ukraine relations, resulting from President Yuschenko’s tenure as president. This communication read in part: Problems in bilateral cooperation have, of course, existed before. This was natural following the disintegration of the Soviet Union, when we had to develop relations between two sovereign states. However, what we have witnessed during the years of your presidency cannot be interpreted as anything other than the Ukrainian party's departure from the principles of friendship and partnership with Russia, embodied in the Treaty of 1997…

May 9, the day Nazi Germany capitulated in 1945, continues to reverberate throughout the former USSR, including Ukraine and Russia, in typical Soviet fashion. Notwithstanding the fact that one of three murderous evil empires of the time was defeated (the second three months later), the over abundance of Soviet Army veterans prancing up and down the streets of Kyiv and Moscow, festooned with medals and other Soviet Communist regalia and blaring Russian music makes Ukrainian patriots wince and turn the other way...

Perhaps we should be happy that the self-anointed nation-members of NATO did not deep six Ukraine’s hopes for membership. At the latest round in Strasbourg, on April 4, the NATO leadership stated in its declaration: “At Bucharest we agreed that Ukraine and Georgia will become members of NATO and we reaffirm all elements of that decision as well as the decisions taken by our Ministers of Foreign Affairs last December.” The Western allies emphasized that...

As Russian leaders Putin and Medvedev continue to live up to their dangerous historic reputations, President Obama, among others, must devote some time in his day to catching up on what they’re saying and doing. To be sure, the economy, terrorism and Iraq-Afghanistan are important but Russia’s adventurism is too diabolical to be overlooked. Despite the European Union and...

Some six weeks after his historic inauguration, President Obama has lived up to his words and made a dramatic and daring attempt at setting America’s economy on a course that will benefit not only all of its citizens but also the global community. We’re still waiting to hear how he intends to deal with Russia and, specifically, its bullying of its neighbors...

I was surprised to see an article in The Ukrainian Weekly (March 1, 2009) accusing the Banderivtsi of killing a Melnykivets’. I thought this type of fraternal calumny was a thing of the past. But then I noticed that it was Myron Kuropas’ column. Some things never change. The Cold War continues. Almost eighteen years after independence, most Banderivtsi and Melnykivtsi have taken their grievances to the grave, while the remaining have found a modus vivendi to help cultivate jointly an independent and democratic Ukraine as a sanctuary for Ukrainians, their language and culture. But not Mr. Kuropas!

The inauguration of America’s first non-white president will undoubtedly be the historical highlight of the early 21st century. Beyond merely defeating the political legacy of a domestically and globally unpopular administration, Barack Obama’s ascendancy to the White House has demonstrated to all generations and strata of the American society – not merely his own, Afro-American, citizens, that change, even hard fought, is possible in multi-cultural America...

A century ago, Stepan Bandera, one of the most influential Ukrainians of the 20th century who devoted his life and work to the cause of igniting a national revolution that would bring freedom and independence to his nation, was born. A half of century ago his life was snuffed out by a Soviet Russian agent’s hand. In the span of five decades Bandera assembled and led a dynamic group of like-minded Ukrainian nationalists who then mobilized perhaps 100,000 freedom fighters who managed to stymie the imperialistic aspirations of Soviet Russia, Nazi Germany and...
