The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) welcomed the Final Report of the Canadian government sponsored International Election Observer Mission for Ukraine's October 2012 parliamentary elections released by Head of Mission Senator Raynell Andreychuk. "The Ukrainian Canadian community is grateful that the government of Canada sent this largest ever independent Election Observer Mission to monitor the election process in Ukraine. We noted with interest that the mission concluded that the elections fell short of meeting international standards in regard to free and fair elections," stated UCC National President Paul Grod. "We are thankful to the Canadian government for placing Canada at the vanguard of nations when it comes to promoting and monitoring democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Ukraine." The government of Canada sponsored a 500 person electoral observation mission including 422 through CANADEM and the remainder through the OSCE. These were in addition to the nearly 300 self-financed observers under the...

After observing the October 28th Ukrainian parliamentary elections as a member of the largest election observation mission assembled by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake shared his views on how the elections were handled. “While there were some problems with the openness of this election, it was very promising to see Ukrainians exercise their democratic rights in strong numbers despite an unlevelled political playing field,” said MP Bezan. MP Bezan served as the regional co-ordinator of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (PA) team deployed in the Chernivtsi oblast and was a member of the OSCE PA Advisory Board for the Ukrainian election. Bezan also acted as the team leader of the Canadian OSCE PA delegation, which consisted of parliamentarians from all official parties in both the House of Commons and the Senate. “I would like to applaud everyone from Canada who...

As you know, last year the Board of Trustees approved the designation of the 4th Friday in November as “Holodomor Memorial Day”. This year, the day falls on Friday, November 23rd. Holodomor Memorial Day is dedicated to the loss of millions of Ukrainian lives at the hands of the Soviet Regime during the great famine of 1932L1933. Brochures from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (Toronto Branch) are being distributed to our school communities to help explain the significance of this catastrophe to our students and staff. We recently paid tribute to the contributions of our service men and women and all those who suffer during times of conflict. We ask you to remember those of Ukrainian descent in our school communities and parishes. To the survivors and their descendents, we extend our prayers and sympathy for the great loss of life and irreversible effect the famine had on the entire world during that time period and for generations to come. The fabric that...

RT. HON. STEPHEN HARPER (Prime Minister of Canada): Thank you very much. Merci beaucoup. Bonjour à tous. Greetings, everyone, and thank you, Senator, for that very kind introduction. I think it’s common knowledge now, Raynell, that you will be leading our delegation to Ukraine. You will be putting to use all the skills you have developed as one of the few people ever in Canada to have served in all three branches of government: in the judiciary as a judge, in the executive as an ambassador, and now in the legislature as a senator. So let me take this opportunity to thank you personally for your willingness to undertake this assignment. I couldn’t be happier to see it in hands as capable or as committed as yours. Thank you. (APPLAUSE) Greetings also to my Parliamentary colleagues, to Minister Baird, to Minister Fantino, to Parliamentary Secretary Lois Brown, and to all Parliamentary colleagues from all parties who have joined us today. Thank you for being here and for lending your support to this vital enterprise. Ladies and gentlemen, before I go any further, I want to congratulate all of you...

James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake, delivered the following statement in the House of Commons, strongly condemned NDP MP’s Peter Julian and Don Davies for hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for former KGB agent, Mikhail Lennikov, in East Vancouver. Bezan said: “Three years ago, the Federal Court of Canada and the Immigration and Refugee Board ruled that former KGB agent Mikhail Lennikov was inadmissible to Canada.” “Lennikov is now a fugitive evading deportation orders, and has illegally taken sanctuary in a church basement in Vancouver.” “Two weeks ago, the NDP MP`s from Burnaby-New Westminster and Vancouver-Kingsway had Thanksgiving dinner with the former KGB agent in a show of support.” “It must be said that anyone who was part of the former KGB assisted in one form or another with the atrocities carried out by the KGB.” “It doesn't matter how basic or advanced their role was, they all worked together to fulfill the KGB`s brutal mission. How many people were wrongfully arrested or killed by the KGB as a result of Lennikov`s services?” “These two NDP MPs have...

"This very important tribute by the Parliament of Canada to the deeds of Metropolitan Sheptytsky in saving the lives of many Jews in the Nazi Holocaust during World War II is a testament to the world of his righteousness," stated UCC National President Paul Grod. "The acts of Metropolitan Sheptytsky shine as a beacon for all of us to do the right thing in the face of difficult circumstances. We applaud this recognition and are grateful for the statement made by Ted Opitz, a Polish Canadian Member of Parliament, and to Minister Jason Kenney for proposing the motion as well as to all Members of Parliament for their principled and non-partisan unanimous approval."...

There is no question that the conference, “Ukraine at the Crossroads” and parliamentary hearings on the status of human rights in Ukraine – all of which took place in Ottawa from March 5th-8th – left an impression on those attending. The inclusion of world-renowned academics and historians, as well as the heartfelt cooperation of the Canadian government, showed that the world is deeply concerned about Ukraine’s well-being - a comforting thought for those who live in the Ukrainian diaspora, and long for their homeland’s economic and political freedom. Though many express this sentiment, it is perhaps the most refreshing to know that young people in the Ukrainian community stand ready not only to learn about the tribulations of their homeland, but to share the heavy burden of eradicating them...
